True Freedom in Midlife

True Freedom in Midlife

“Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose," that line from the song Me and Bobby McGee sung by Janis Joplin just keeps playing on repeat in my head.

It's true for many people when they hit rock bottom, they no longer need to live up to others expectations and it can be a release, a freeing to do what you want or be who you were always meant to be.

Freedom doesn't have to come only when we hit rock bottom.

I have been contemplating freedom a lot lately as it is one of the discussions I have repeated with the women in my world, friends, and family but also the women I coach.

As you hit 50 or thereabouts, freedom becomes really fundamental. Many women feel like they have waited half a lifetime to be free, putting family, society, work, and things they believed they needed to do before themselves.

I am living a newfound freedom between the country and the sea. It’s a physical one, a mental one, and a spiritual one.

After years of living in Paris, having a flower and vegetable garden is so enchanting.

It feels like a miracle to watch old Mr. Cucumber produce and produce beautiful green fruits all summer long. And then Mrs. Eggplant, what a sturdy old gal she is, who just hits her stride around September and becomes her own fruit and vegetable shop, giving so generously day after day.

Every plant and flower feels like they have a personality and I feel as though I am walking into a new room (albeit open air) and I have these new found friends I need to understand and cherish.

Plants are smart!

Anyway, back to freedom.

Freedom in midlife for me are many things and one of them is having time to potter in my garden and get to know how life works better.

Freedom for me is wanting to give back to the community, to create something that will make a difference in others' lives. Freedom is to continue to be myself and to have the discussions that count and get a plane when I want to.

I know for everyone I speak to, freedom is something different.

For some, it is taking the ideas and experience they have formed over 50 years and expressing them in art or writing.

For others, it means travelling, having more time for themselves or creative projects.

Many women crave the ultimate personal freedom, to stand in their own shoes and be good with themselves, not to have to second guess who they are or what they want.

One of the themes I see is that many women in midlife want to give back. For some, they can be starting a business they have dreamed about for the past twenty years or a kernel of an idea has sprung to life.

For others, it's personal freedom to be yourself and having the courage to say no or yes to whatever your heart's desire.

For others, it's money in the bank, a road ahead of you with no plans and no destination.

I hope to contribute to the conversation in the coming months as I launch a series of small online workshops catering to the things that will ultimately give us freedom to live the lives we want.

The first workshop is Get Lucky: Mastering Vibration to Manifest PERSONAL, CREATIVE, AND FINANCIAL FREEDOM.

I would love to invite you to join me to discuss in detail what it means to master our personal vibration so we can get really clear on bringing the things to life they are dear to us.

Hi Carla,
I always feel a strong connection to your emails; they resonate deeply with me. Your recent message on “freedom” felt like you were reading my thoughts. I’ve taken a year off to travel the world, exploring the great outdoors and stepping outside my comfort zone. This journey has allowed me to discover more about myself and engage in retreats focused on personal growth.
I’m very interested in joining a workshop with you and others on this topic. Kudos for creating such a valuable space for sharing and learning!
Much love,
Ronit
