Six Tips For Creative Clarity in 2018

Dear Folks,

I have just landed back in Paris and excited to start 2018 and share my six tips for creative clarity in 2018!!

I loved being in Australia and having the chance to meet so many beautiful new people, hear their stories and share mine.

I loved 2017! It was a year full of new and exciting experiences, a ton of travel and one that I am proud of.. including taking these pics of two beautiful gals the fabulous Sarah Hudson of Birdie Hill and her daughter Clare. What a fabulous day with two divine women!!

Six Tips For Creative Clarity in 2018 Black and white photography, photography workshop, italian photography workshop, travel photography workshop, travel photography workshop italy, portraiture, fashion portrait, movement, carla coulson, creative coach, creative entrepreneur, photographer, photographers life, italy, photography workshop puglia, beginners travel photography workshop, photography

I remember back to this time in 2017 and what my hopes and dreams were and how I jotted them down in my journal. It’s extraordinary to look back and see so much of what I wanted actually happened and the beautiful thing was at the beginning of the year I didn’t ask myself ‘how’ I was going to do it, I just knew I wanted to do it.

That’s the magic thing about clarity. When you are clear on what you want no matter what area of your life and you mix it with passion, light, and love you are an unstoppable creative cabaret dancer (you know what I mean) !!!

So I thought these tips might help you get clear on what you want from 2018.

  1. Think of your biggest vision for yourself and your creativity and don’t ask yourself how you will do it, just know you want to do it. Write a text on what you see and feel. Get into detail about the work you will create, the people you want to work with, the places you will visit, where you want to create or how much money will be in your bank account!! Whatever is authentic to you.
  2.  Close your eyes and imagine yourself on a stage or on a big screen at the end of 2018 telling your story, whose lives will you have touched, what work will you have created and what peace of mind do you feel? Will you have presented your first exhibition, launched your book, worked with the world’s best clients, made people laugh and dance and sing and touch them? Will it be that you have better relationships, more time and peace or dare to create what you have wanted to do forever?
  3. What are you going to make non-negotiable in 2018 for your business, creativity and life. What are you done with? What do you want to let go of?
  4. Close your eyes and ask yourself what is standing in your way of your vision for 2018 and where you are now. Is it a belief, systems, money, time or something else? Get clear on what will be the one thing that will come between you and your vision for this year.
  5. Create a morning routine that will support you and your vision for 2018. What you do in the morning sets up your day so create a routine that will take you a step closer each day. It could include meditation, exercise, journaling and visualizing.
  6. Give yourself permission to create what’s in your heart cause that’s where the good stuff is and when you create from a place of love and joy that’s when the universe sends you the magic.

I will leave you with my new favourite quote by Marianne Williamson

“Do what you love. Do what makes your heart sing. And never do it for money. Don’t go to work to make money; go to work to spread joy. Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven, and the Maserati will get here when it is supposed to.”

Happy 2018.

Are There Too Many Photographers In The World?

Dear Folks,

Have you ever thought, ‘there are just too many photographers, I might as well quit now.’

Black and white photography, photography workshop, italian photography workshop, travel photography workshop, travel photography workshop italy, portraiture, fashion portrait, movement, carla coulson, creative coach, creative entrepreneur, photographer, photographers life, italy, photography workshop puglia, beginners travel photography workshop, photography ritz paris, Carla Coulson, Carla Coulson Photography, Photographers, Careers, Inspiration, Self Made, Paris, Ritz, Coaching, France, black and white photography, reflection, photographer, paris photographer, photography workshops

It’s true, if you look around us everyone has a good camera these days and they are all madly snapping photos of almost anything.  Phone cameras have become so sophisticated that even they produce the most incredible images and even top end brands are paying ‘stars’ to create million dollar campaigns on their iPhone.

There are images everywhere you look, on buses, social media, television, billboards and giant screens around the cities and sometimes you might ask ‘is there room for one more photographer?’.

But a voice inside of me says ‘so what if there are too many photographers?’. I believe there is enough room for all of us.

I am sure people in other artistic fields feel the same way. A graphic artist, illustrator or even interior designer if they just kept looking at the numbers of people in their field would curl into a ball in the fetal position and throw the pen or fabric down.

Black and white photography, photography workshop, italian photography workshop, travel photography workshop, travel photography workshop italy, portraiture, fashion portrait, movement, carla coulson, creative coach, creative entrepreneur, photographer, photographers life, italy, photography workshop puglia, beginners travel photography workshop, photography too many photographers, carla coulson photography, paris, carla coulson, coaching, photographers, photography career, comparison, trust, images, intuition, creative,

But my lovelies, I would ask you not to look to what everybody else is doing and look inside and listen to the voice of your inner photographer who has something to say. Maybe the voice is quiet right now, self-doubting, shy, scared but if you start to trust it and allow yourself to do what it wants, you will find an incredible vision of your own.

It’s your vision that is your Excalibur sword. It’s your vision that will slash its way through all the images out there and have someone saying ‘I have to have my photos taken by THAT photographer or whose photos are these?’

If you trust your vision, if you you listen to your inner voice instead of comparing yourself to everyone else, you will let the magic out!

So on the days you are doubting your greatness, listen to your inner photographer or creative, even if it is a soft whisper and then go create what it is whispering to you.

Sending love and whispers

I love this subject and probably not being a mum I have never had to worry about my child becoming a creative or a photographer but it is something I think about often.

I remember when I announced to the world (well my little world) almost 16 years ago after doing a photography course in Italy that I was going to become a photographer.

I had all sorts of reactions. A dear friend who was a radio announcer made a couple of wise cracks about the sun setting over the water and clichéd photos and with a wave of a hand sort of dismissed the idea (in his mind). In mine, I had that beautiful naivety of not knowing anything about what I was doing and thought I would show him better.

Others told me that I had had my fun as a photographer and now it was time to get a real job. I am sure it was out of care and visions of poverty in my old age but I was so ‘all in’ there was no way I was taking his advice either.

But when I told my mother that I want to be a professional photographer, she looked at me with belief and trust and said ‘that sounds lovely dear’. She didn’t ask me for a business plan, she didn’t come up with all the excuses as to why I shouldn’t do it and go live on the other side of the world.

My mum did the most fabulous thing a mum can do for a creative which is to believe I could do it. She had seen me struggle for years in a business I didn’t love, she had seen me single and lonely with one too many heartbreaks to even suggest for a minute a safe alternative in a city office. She had seen me try to cuddle up to my Gucci and Pucci without it working!!!

I am sure it hurt I was spending a ton of time on the other side of the world but she put what I wanted before what she wanted and what a gift she gave me.

My mum and dad came to stay with me in Florence and walked around the piazzas and hear my endless enthusiasm for this place I loved so dearly. They ate, drank and lived like Italians. They got to see their daughter bursting with happiness when her first article was published in Marie Claire and they almost popped with pride at the same time.

They took my favourite boat ride with me to Da Adolfo on the Amalfi Coast and fell in love with the concept of a beachbed and a restaurant at the the back of the beach. They felt special and lived a beautiful moment and saw the coast I love so much when Sergio the owner let us tag along on a boat ride to Amalfi.

They have devotedly dashed up to the newsagent every time a magazine has come out with my pics and bought numerous copies of my books for everyone and anyone who needed a present.

My mum and her team of ninja grannies became my biggest fans, moving books around the shelves in Sydney bookstores so they were always up the front and couldn’t help telling anyone that wanted to listen that it was her daughter’s and it would be a REALLY good thing if you bought it.

Although we have shared many years apart we have also shared this amazing journey together. They knew the backstory, they have seen it from the start, brick by brick building this thing, every brick I built was their brick and they have helped me and shared in the joy and reward that I have shared. They welcomed my Italian boyfriend (now husband) into their lives with open arms and without jealousy or fear.

When ‘we’ started this journey who would have ever known how it was going to pan out. Maybe they could see the fire in my eyes or in my belly, maybe they decided to trust that I was finally on my path and this time I would hit ‘emotional’ and creative gold.

If you are reading this and you are a mum and your child wants to go on a journey of their own that maybe doesn’t fit with your vision for their life, stay open to the magic that you could share together, the love, the support and the joy that you too could bring to your beloved child’s life and the magic that you will help them find in themselves and in the world.

Love you Mum and Dad,  thanks for the belief and trust.

Dear Friends,

I had a great year last year.

For so many reasons, I became a life coach, stretched my photography business to places I never believed it could go, travelled, laughed, learnt and most importantly had my beautiful niece work with me for most of the year.

Yes, folks that is what dreams are made of, or at least for me.

For 15 years I have harbored the fantasy that those little munchkins I left behind in the year 2000 and who were the stars of Italian Joy, would one day grow up and want to come to Europe and hang out with Aunty Carla.

Well, I can safely safe folks, dreams do come true. I have had the fortune to have more than one dream come true and having my darling Eliza by my side was possibly the best one.

We travelled, we photographed, we laughed, we cried, we ate ice-cream and did crazy selfies in old fashioned photo booths in Florence, she taught me stuff and I returned the favour. Not only did she come but so did her beautiful sisters, her fab cousins and her mother. What a year!

At the end of the year it felt all too good to be true. It was hard to let her go but I know she has great things coming her way.

Just as she was about to go we had a little chat and she gave me the biggest compliment of 2016. She told me ‘I don’t care what people think of me’!

For a minute I was almost offended and then she explained, “no matter who you are with on a shoot, (including some famous folk) you goof around and make a fool of yourself and you don’t decide things based on what other people think you.”

After I got use to this compliment, I felt proud that I had the chance to show someone (without knowing it), its ok to stand up and be who you are, to stand in the power of being truly you, to live your life the way you always wanted to, as my authentic self.

If I gave her just one gift last year, this was my proudest moment.

And boy do I know the road well to being that comfortable with myself.

I too would love to pass this onto you too, if you want to make 2017 the best year of YOUR life, un-lock the recipe to your greatness, I have just 3 places left for the coming six months.

If you want to flip your career, stretch what you are doing further than you have ever taken it before, raise your prices and get out of exhaustion or overhaul your current creative business I would love to help you. You can check out the details HERE or get in touch with me her for a chat HERE.

I would love to help you make your dreams a reality.
