Grottaglie A Ceramics Town – My Addresses

Imagine a town that has survived for hundreds of years on making beautiful hand-made ceramics. Add a twist of Southern Italian charm, workshops dug into soft stone to form grottos (grottaglie – that’s where the name comes from) and hundreds of artisans turning clay into pots, jugs, plates, cups, saucers, statues and other works of art – then you would have Grottaglie.

I discovered Grottaglie a couple of summers ago when Francesco and I were at the beach and it became too crowded so we decided to head inland for lunch (no Italian in their right mind would do this in August) but this is one of our tricks to finding something magical and real.

Grottaglie, Ceramics town, Puglia Carla Coulson travel photography workshop 0003

And that is exactly what happened. We found the magical Grottaglie.. I could hardly wait to finish lunch to start snooping around the hundreds of ceramic workshops.

And we didn’t walk away empty handed…

So when I started planning the Caravan Travel Photography Workshop I started to think of all the things I loved about Puglia and Grottaglie sprang to mind.

I decided to include the things I would do if I was to shoot a story on a region, include the things that I love, that visually excite me and I knew would make for interesting pics.

So back I went to Grottaglie and with the help of Francesca Frisa we toured many beautiful workshops and met many great artisans.

Grottaglie has been inhabited since the Paleolithic age and is just up the rode from one of the first Greek settlements in Italy, Taranto.

The local stone is called tufo In Italian and is soft enough to be able to dig into.  Since Medieval times there have been caves dug around what is now the castle and slowly they were taken over and used as ceramic workshops.

Many finds around Grottaglie date back to the Classical age and the Museo Delle Ceramiche in Grottaglie has the whole story!

But on any given day you can turn up in Grottaglie and walk the area known as the Quartier dell Ceramiche and go from one workshop to the next and see artisans turning clay, painting, dipping statues in white and creating every imaginable statue possible.

 Fountain Casa Vestita

Whilst walking from workshop to workshop with Francesca she told me about Mimmo Vestita who had an incredible Mediterranean garden right in the middle of town and who recently whilst renovating the garden had discovered the floor of a Roman Villa and a byzantine crypt.

I had co-incidently seen his garden and crypt in the beautiful magazine Cote Sud and begged to have a look.

It was a garden like I had never seen before. So beautiful in it’s simplicity and it’s devotion to the Mediterranean climate, plants and his collection of over 4000 pieces of ceramic.

Mimmo generously opened his garden to the ‘Caravaners’ and kindly showed us the floor of the Roman Villa his renovator found whilst restoring the garden.

He also lead us down in to the exquisite Byzantine crypt that had been closed for over 400 years.

Whilst restoring another part of the garden and pulling away broken debris and trees the gardener found a carved column. They called in the archaeological society and together they went on a magical mystery tour and found a true treasure the underground crypt.

If you are in Puglia don’t miss a visit to beautiful Grottaglie. She’s real, she’s artistic, she hasn’t been trussed up for the tourists and there are many wonderful photos to be had.

A giant round of applause to the all the artisans who gave their time and talent to us, who allowed us into their bottega’s to see how they work, create and maintain an ancient tradition. True southern hospitality at it’s most generous. I look forward to showing the participants work soon.

By the way, try leaving empty handed!

Grottaglie

This is a private Mediterranean garden and the best one I have seen to date. Mimmo Vestita, the owner has a ceramics workshop up the road and not long ago unearthed a Byzantine Crypt underneath his garden and the floor of a Roman Villa. He opens the garden to the public for a small fee in August from 6pm to 10pm and regularly has exhibitions of some of his 4000 pieces of antique ceramics. DON’T MISS IT!! Follow on Facebook here.

Puglia – Masseria Cimino

Masseria Cimino, Carla Coulson

Long before you arrive at Masseria Cimino you are struck by the sight of ancient olive trees that resemble sculptures, twisted over hundreds of years with winds, run and the scorching sun.

These ancient olive trees have always been one of my favourite things about Puglia, a reminder of how old this land is and how deeply ingrained the olive tree is in the culture and history.

Masseria Cimino, Carla Coulson

 Masseria Cimino Copyright Carla Coulson

I decided to make Masseria Cimino a part of the first Caravan Travel Photography Workshop for a couple of reasons. I loved it’s exquisite make-over, not too flashy and not too rustic, somewhere in between.

And I knew it would make the perfect setting for the photographers to take interior and exterior shots and as a background to shoot food.

Masseria Cimino, Carla Coulson

Masseria Cimino is an exquisite palette of white broken only by the local vegetation of cactus trees, olives and rosemary and the soft blue they have chosen for the doors, windows and furniture.

There is one original red wall and we all went mad shooting it.

The Bar Masseria Cimino Copyright Carla Coulson

The furniture in the interior of the bar has been constructed of concrete in the simple way they do in the Greek Islands and a clever interior designer has added lovely soft furnishings in white and beige. Cactus leaves hang as decoration in the main room. I learnt later on the trip this was a traditional custom, the Pugliese do this to conserve the fruit that grows on this plant so they can eat it fresh for months to come.

What is your dream photography job?… Check out one of mine..

Harpers Bazaar Carla Coulson0001

All photos copyright Carla Coulson for Harper’s Bazaar

Gawd… After sunshine and blue skies on a Greek Island it’s hard to fly back into Paris to rain and 22 degrees but coming home to this story published in this months Australian Harper’s Bazaar made it all ok.

Have you ever asked yourself what your dream photography job (or one of them) would be? What ingredients you would throw into the recipe to make it just the way you wanted? Would it be fashion? Would it be portraiture? Would it be travel or a fabulous interior? Would their be dancing dogs and fairy floss?

Harpers Bazaar Carla Coulson0003

All photos copyright Carla Coulson for Harper’s Bazaar

I have asked myself this question often. Recently the phone rang with a fairy on the end of it (Harper’s Bazaar) and asked me whether I wanted to do one of my dream jobs?? I figured they must have hacked into my mind’s c-drive and pulled out all those delicious ingredients I had dreamed of, rolled them all together to form Carla’s dream job.

Harpers Bazaar Carla Coulson0004

All photos copyright Carla Coulson for Harper’s Bazaar

There would be a ramshackled Chateau, crumbling with paint peeling and faded ballrooms. A gorgeous woman and handsome hubby, there would be a stunning daughter and super cute son and BIG FROCKS with tulle and stuff! And there would be fashion pics and portraiture, interiors and exteriors and kookiness if I wanted it.

Harpers Bazaar Carla Coulson0005

The reality turned out to be just like the dream. Everything they promised was there. The gorgeous Karina Waters of Chateau Gudanes  is not only a beauty but one of the nicest women I know and giggles a lot (bonus).  She and her hubby fell in love with this gorgeous pile in the midi-pyrenees and are in the process of renovating it.

Peeling wall paper still clings to the walls, hand-painted frescoes and beautiful balustrades guard the stairs and the music room is still adorned with gold. There were old tapestries waiting to go on the walls one day, glamorous French beds and pretty pink chairs.

So although I have been spoilt with jobs through out the years including many fashion jobs I truly loved with the heavenly Marta Innocenti Ciulli, this was another one to pop in my favourite memories hat. A favourite because I had the chance to use all the skills I have learnt throughout the years in fashion and interiors. Kind of like gobbling a whole box of Laduree macaroons out the front of the shop.

Another of my dream jobs will be sharing the skills I have learnt in fashion and portraiture this January 5,6,7,8  in Sydney at the Picture This Workshop where I will show you how to create emotion packed portraits with a fashion twist just like on these pages. All details here .

So if you are feeling stuck, trapped in a job you don’t like and want to acquire the skills to take your portraiture to the next step this workshop is designed to do exactly that.

What would your dream photography job be? What ingredients would you stir into it if you had the choice? I would love to hear your thoughts and dreams..

Puglia – A Day At The Sea

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0068

San Vito near Polignano A Mare

Hopefully by the time you read this I will be floating in the Greek equivalent of the water above!

I have been wanting to share some behind the scenes images of the recent Caravan Travel Photography Workshop in gorgeous Puglia so I figure the sea is not a bad place to start.

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0071

I had one afternoon before the workshop started and I threw myself into the action at the local beach at Polignano A Mare with best buddy and workshop organiser Athalee Brown and Mr. Logistics Graham Seers (also known as super famous cyclist in his other life).

As you can see it was wall to wall flesh at the beach but hey people watching Olympics as a free bonus.

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0064

Francesco has been telling me about the local delicacy for years, the Octopus panino.  It just so happened the day at the beach seemed to be octopus themed. This little guy caught his first ever octopus and I couldn’t resist a snap.

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0065

Meanwhile on the other side of the cove and out the back of the fish shop the poor octopus is tenderised in a particularly brutal way. Not for vegetarians or animals (and octopus) lovers..

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0066

Round 1 goes to the fisherman.

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0072

Up the back of the beach in a little wooden shack is home to the local delicacy and Graham bravely lined up for his first Octopus panino.. Needless to say Francesco all the way from Paris glowed with pride..

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0073

Ath considers taking a bite of hubby’s panino.

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0075

Two lifeline friends who meet each day at the local beach in Monopoli. Ahh seems like the greatest of life’s rituals to me..

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0074

Italy were playing the world cup so great to see a proud Italian supporting their team even at the beach.

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0078

The old port in Monopoli, a beautiful boat and a rose patterned blanket.

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0080

Monopoli early in the morning..

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0076

Local fisherman preparing his lines, Dolce and Gabbana could certainly poach this guy for a new ad campaign.

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0079

Where there is the sea and fisherman there is always a beautiful shrine (and Carla trying to sniff it out). One of my favourites in Monopoli.

Carla Coulson Caravan travel Photography Workshop0083

And where there are fishermen and fish there are bound to be sleepy cats with a tummy full of fish. Too tired to open his eyes..

Stay tuned for more posts on beautiful Puglia..

Wishing you a fabulous summer and hopefully you too are floating in transparent water.

Life Lessons I have Learnt From Travel

Carla Coulson Travel Photography Greece Australia Spain Italy 0013

Isabella on the way to Positano with her mum copyright Carla Coulson

I am blogging today from beautiful Argentario in Tuscany! Gobbling one cappuccino after the other and inhaling the best of this country I love so dearly. I thought I would have a little flashback  on a chapter of my life and all the great life lessons that travel has taught me.

Eliza and Isabella, my two nieces, are lost in their thoughts as the boat makes its way back from Laurito to Positano. It is our last day on the Amalfi Coast before we head to Rome. The sun slid behind the mountains an hour ago and everything has been painted in different shades of blue. We are coated in sea and sun. Positano is just minutes away.

Jumping off the rocks Laurito Copyright Carla Coulson

The lady sitting on the other side of the small wooden boat with her daughter is familiar: I met her during my first summer here almost ten years ago. Our eyes meet and we start to chat about the intervening years and how both of us have made the pilgrimage every year to Laurito, though in different months. As the boat pulls into the small dock, the lady turns to me and says, ‘Noi portiamo questo posto nel nostro cuore’ (we take this place with us in our hearts). Her words stop me in my tracks. I have been searching for them forever, trying to describe the sensation that loving a place brings. Trust an Italian to find the right word! I hug her, knowing we will meet again – were were long ago connected by this special place.

Travel has given me some of my fondest memories and dearest encounters. I remember sitting in Paris-Orly Airport waiting to board a 5am flight to Athens, when an elderly lady sat down next to me. She told me that her husband had died a couple of years previously and she had finally found the courage to make her first trip since his death. She was going to the Bahamas. When it was time for her to board her plane, she leaned over and said “I love the airport. Air and port. It’s incredible really – like something out of The Jetsons”. Full of hope, she grabbed her bag and headed to the Bahamas. And I headed, chuckling, to Athens.

Friends having a heart to heart Seville Copyright Carla Coulson

During my first years in Italy, every street corner was a novelty, every old man who rode by on a pint-sized bike made me smile and the beauty of every marble statue touched me. Every experience filled me with awe and love for my new home. I loved taking my shoes to be heeled at the 200-year-old cobbler’s store, over hearing the lady in the latteria discussing her son’s love affair, and walking the streets where Michelangelo once strolled.

Carla Coulson Travel Photography Greece Australia Spain Italy 0010

Travel has inspired me to learn Italian and French. It has given me the education I always dreamed of. I belive the past eleven years in Europe have been my ‘university degree’.

Ancient statues on the Greek Island of Delos Copyright Carla Coulson

I have studied the Botticellis in the Uffizzi Gallery not once but ten times, and stood before the ‘Winged Victory of Samothrace’ sculpture in the Louvre with joy in my heart. I have roamed the ancient ruins of Delos with awe and wonder, and scaled a mountain in Anafi to seek out the remnants of a lost civilisation. I have scrutinised the fine detail and beauty of Moroccan architecture and risen at dawn to view the stunning shore temples of Mahabalipuram in India.

Carla Coulson Travel Photography Greece Australia Spain Italy 0002

I have travelled to Naples to see Sanmartino’s breathtaking ‘Il Cristo Velato’ and listened to the stories of the ‘last’ generation of Italians, knowing that when they die, they will take an ancient way of living with them.

Could there be a greater teacher than travel?

What has travel taught you? I would love to hear your thoughts and places or situations that have touched you.
