The Benefits of Being A Published Photographer

Get Published Carla Coulson The Benefits

Have you ever wondered what would happen to your profile or career if you had your images published in  prestigious magazines locally and Internationally?

I have the great fortune throughout the past twelve years to have had my images published over and over again in magazines and books but the thrill of seeing those pages and the ‘atomic reaction’ that comes soon after never ceases to astonish me.

What ‘reaction’ I can hear you saying?

Now I worked closely with the gorgeous folks at Qantas magazine for almost 9 years and I knew what readership power this magazine has so when I heard they were publishing an excerpt of my new book I was doing double star jumps.

Yep, 1,000,000 people read this magazine which is on every flight in the world for a month. Now if you have ever flown from Paris to Sydney, Sydney to China and run out of reading material you will be scouring those Qantas pages in minute detail, each story a little lifesaver that will get you painlessly to touchdown.

There were hundreds of times when I had shot a story for Qantas, a hotel in Florence, a boutique in Milan, a market in Sicily and faithfully gone back with the magazine sometime later.

Nine times out ten I had been beaten to the cause by an enthusiastic traveller who had jumped off the plane, ripped out the pages of the magazine and so excited to go to one of the destinations that had been photographed, had presented themselves long at the said place before I could even get there with my copy!

So I was skipping and hugging myself with happiness when the wonderful folks at Qantas said they were going to publish an excerpt of my latest book Naples A Way Of Love cause I knew what was going to happen. An avalanche of people calling, snapping the magazine and sending me a pic, friends husbands reporting in that they had seen me (the story and my name) on the flight home and lots of Google Juice to my website (keep it coming I am loving it!).

So if you dream of being published photographer here are some of the benefits of having your photographs published in magazines:

Instant credibility as a ‘working’ photographer.

Marketing ‘a go go’! Having your name published in a magazine is like having a private publicity campaign done on your behalf for your work as a photographer and depending on the distribution of the magazine your name and photos reach a wide audience that we can only dream of.

You get an instant profile. I call it the ‘now I exist syndrome’. There are two Carla’s the one before she had anything published and the one after.

Having your photos and name published in a magazine is marketing not only to the public but to every art director in the industry and gives you more credibility in their eyes. It also makes it easier to approach other magazines with whom you want to work.

The published pages of the magazine with your work are known as ‘tear sheets’. These pages are gold and can translate into big advertising contracts or commercial work if that is the direction you want to go in.

Having a book published was made easier when I presented my portfolio of magazine work, the publisher immediately knew I had a profile and was a reliable professional photographer (why?.. because magazines were booking me and they wouldn’t be working with me if I didn’t deliver).

I hope you enjoyed this little insight into a couple of benefits of what can happen if you have your photos published.

Naples A Way Of Love

Naples A Way Of Love smallAll Images from Naples A Way Of Love Copyright Carla Coulson Published by Penguin Australia

Twelve years ago I rolled up in Naples for the first time, stood on the streets with life whirring around me at a thousand miles an hour, murmuring like a madwoman  ‘it’s not too late, it’s not too late I have finally arrived in a photographers paradise ahead of time”.

Naples A Way of Love Carla Coulson Lisa Clifford

I was torn, should I pack up my life in Florence, leave my photography studies and move to Naples to devote my life to photographing this place that is so rich, so poor, so tough, so kind, so generous and so me?

I felt like my blood had little bubbles inside like someone had mixed it with champagne. I started looking at apartments, checking out neighbourhoods and shooting myself stupid along the way. Florence won over and a little bit of regret has stayed in my heart  all these years.

I continued to visit, to shoot, to love profoundly this place that has such a tough reputation. In Italy you either love Naples  or hate it and there is no in between. But the ones like me that give Naples a go, fall in love like smitten fools and will defend her to the last slice of pizza!

Naples A Way Of Love

One of those smitten fools is gorgeous writer Lisa Clifford and this book idea was born in a Florentine bar over a very large Aperol and prosecco (which had just been kindly offered to both of us by a very handsome waiter to celebrate my wedding).

Charged with Aperol and champagne I told Lisa of this burning desire I had to shoot Naples but I wanted a fab writer to tell the stories of the people of Naples and the things that make Naples throb. She said ‘I’ll do it”

And that was how the idea was born to shoot this book on Naples! To tell and show the stories of the Neapolitans and their Naples.

Naples is the home of pizza and we tracked down Naples most fabulous pizzaioli to tell their stories, their secrets and their relationship with Naples.

When most people think of Naples they never think of elegance but Naples is the home to Italy’s great sartoria, the equivalent of Saville Row. Pictured above is the heavenly Gennaro Solito who was born in the Quartiere Spagnoli and rose to become one of the greatest tailors in the world. His story brings tears to my eyes.

Naples is the home of tabernacles and beautiful girls flying on scooters. We left no rock unturned. We shot in the markets, the streets, the artisan’s workshops, the pizzeria’s, the cafes, the churches, the cemetaries, talking, walking, shooting and gathering their stories.

Evi O the fabulous graphic designer of Naples A Way Of Love continued the story of the photos and words with her beautiful design that has brought magic, warmth and love.  What a treat to work with her! Opera clap for Evi O..

This is a book that I want to stand on the rooftops and scream with happiness and joy that I had the opportunity to shoot, to live and to dream about. This was a rare project that started with joy and wonder and finished with wonder and joy. I love this book with all my heart.

What Katie Ate

I have two divine special guests this year at the Get Published workshop and to say I am quivering with excitement would be an understatement.

I have loved Katie Quinn Davies work (of the fabulous blog What Katie Ate) since the first time I discovered her moody, beautifully styled food shots on her blog. I have admired her story from graphic artist to self taught photographer to International published author and photographer and then hold onto your hat, James Beard Food Photographer Winner. Phew..

Katie will be joining us to share her incredible journey along with the fabulous Sharon Misko Creative Director of Inside Out at Get Published on Saturday 14th December 2013.

Sharon Misko, Creative Director of divine interiors magazine Inside Out joined us last year to teach photographers what art directors and creative directors are looking for in a photographers portfolio.

Sharon also talked about photographic style, do’s and don’ts when presenting your work or shooting a story and critiqued two photographers work for the benefit of all the participants. She answered as many questions from photographers as possible and was an outstanding success!!

Due to popular demand and extraordinary feedback from all participants on Sharon’s style and presentation I am thrilled she will be joining us again this year.

Sharon’s presentation helped photographers such as Jacqui Turk, Erin Latimore and Natasha Calhoun have their worked published in Australian and International magazines this year and you can see some of their published work here.

Of course I will be there too!! I will share my journey, my experiences across the magazine and publishing industry and break down into bite size steps how I managed to publish my first magazine story straight out of photography school (and 100’s of subsequent photographic stories) and have my work published in 7 books.

You will walk away with a copy of my Get Published book and a thousand ideas on how you too can have your photos published.

Can’t wait to see you in Sydney.
